Cathedral Pines Campground

This is a private campground, that offers an area for public swimming.  The campground itself is really unique, with towering trees and lakeside sites.  The waterfront sites book up months in advance, but we stayed at a forest site and it was still one of our favorite campgrounds, solely for the beauty of the trees. […]

Riverside Park, Carrabassett River

Park in the large dirt parking lot along route 27, then follow the overgrown paved trail leading from the left hand side of lot into the woods.  The trail will split, and you follow the smaller path down to the water.  You can see the river from the parking lot, so it is easy to find. […]

Rangeley Lake State Park

This state park offers lake swimming with wonderful mountain views.  The water is crystal clear and deep, and they allow unfettered access.  There is a large grass beach with stone steps leading down to the water. Across the Rangeley Lake is the town of Rangeley, a cute town that is located halfway between the Equator […]

Lakeside Park, Riverside Park, Rangeley

This park is alternately called “Lakeside Park” and “Riverside Park.” This is a small town park in downtown Rangeley, with a swimming area and boat launch.  There are nice views of the lake, a playground, and covered picnic areas.  The swimming area is small, and probably better for children.

Ellis Falls

We’ve heard this is a popular swimming spot, however no one was there when we visited.  The dark water has multiple falls all pouring into a medium sized pool.  Since we didn’t swim here and only photographed it, we don’t know the depth of the water since you couldn’t see that deep into it.  The […]

Devil’s Den, Silver Ripple Cascade

I guess there used to be a sign for “Devil’s Den Road” but during our visit it had been removed.   From the intersection of 120 and South Arm Road, follow South Arm Road for about 4.6 miles.  When you see the narrow black and white post sign marking the “Andover Town Line,” take the […]

The Cataracts

This is a beautiful location, with two separate areas that might be possible for swimming. There is a calmer area above the main falls with small pools and various small waterfalls.  The other area is below the main waterfall, which is difficult to get to and not recommended for children. This pool is secluded and […]

Umbagog State Park

This is a beautiful lake, with state campgrounds scattered around it, some only accessible by boat.  The main campground is small and slightly crowded, but watching the lake makes up for it.  They have a roped swimming area, which is a little small, but I asked the ranger and she said you’re allowed to swim […]

Sunday River Road

This location is totally unknown, and we just happened upon it.  It is roadside on the way to Frenchman’s Hole and they had just laid pavement to form a very small pull-off area.  There is a path down to the water, so we thought it might be an area that you’re allowed to be in. […]

Step Falls

Park in the signed parking lot, and follow the yellow marked trail up to the fall. This is a really fun hike that runs along a slope of waterfalls.  The water is a beautiful clear green, flowing down multiple slides and pools.  The views from the top are gorgeous.  There aren’t many deep pools, but […]
