Popham Beach

Popham beach is one of the most popular beaches in Maine, and it is one of our favorites.  It has a massive sand beach, and since the parking lot is relatively small, it never feels too crowded.  It does fill up early on weekends though, and there is often a line of cars waiting.

The beach has a tidal river and lagoon area, which make it an interesting place to spend the day, as the beach changes quite a lot with high and low tides.  During low tide there is a small rock island that you can explore, and if the river is low enough, you could cautiously cross over to the nearby Morse Mountain Beach.  There are expansive views of nearby islands and a lighthouse. Some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen have been here since some of the beach faces west.

For all beaches in this area we recommend getting there early, and not bringing your dog.  Dogs are not allowed on most beaches in this area, and are not allowed at Popham at all during the summer months.
