Green Lakes State Park
This state park may be one of the most interesting swimming places in New York. The turquoise waters cover a freshwater reef, which is exceedingly rare. Parts of the reef are visible from the shore, and it is fascinating to observe. Wikipedia lists it as “perhaps the most studied meromictic lake – one in which layers of water do not mix – in the world.” You can read more about it here:
This is one of the prettiest beaches in the state and it is was really too bad that we were there on a rainy day. We were able to get some shots in between rain showers, but even with the rain the water was intensely blue, and remarkably clear. There is a large beach with multiple swim areas, all facilities, concessions, camping, and picnic areas. The facilities are updated and well maintained.
