Ausable Chasm

This is a huge tourist complex with camping, motel, concessions, a museum, and multiple adventure options. You can also get a duel ticket to visit High Falls Gorge, if you’d like to see both. All of the adventure trips look really fun, including TUBING in the chasm.  They also have rafting, rappelling, and a candlelight tour- they even have ice climbing in the winter.

Since these trips were out of the scope of our project, we regretfully didn’t do any, but the view of the falls is also worth seeing. The welcome center has a short (and free!) trail that you can see the upper falls from, but the best view is actually from the bridge before the center.  There is free parking on both sides of the bridge and you can step out and see the falls. Really gorgeous waterfalls, and there is a power plant on the side that is actually quite pretty. There are also 5 miles of hiking trails that you can buy a ticket for, but the front desk people said that you couldn’t see any waterfalls from that trail.

There is another fall up river called Alice Falls that is a hydro project, and they do let people view the falls, but they close at 3pm, and we missed it. To get to that fall, you go past Old State Road and momentarily you’ll see a dirt road (Adirondack Park preserve) and there is a sign for Alice Hydro Project.
