Whitaker Falls Park

This location is variously called Whitaker or Whittaker, but we went with the town website spelling of “Whitaker” http://villageoflowville.org/content/Parks/View/3

This is a sort of unusual park in that it has a gorgeous set of waterfalls, but we didn’t find the access very clear.  The falls could be a great tourist attraction, but the access is a little hard to find.  To see the falls you have to climb down them, and we wouldn’t recommend this location for children.

The falls are a short walk from the parking lot, they just aren’t marked well. There is an official sign at the parking area that says, “Waterfalls” with an arrow pointing to the right, but this just led to a fenced in area.  This might be a case where they give tours at certain times, and this is where you check-in.  If that is the case, it wasn’t clear from the signage.

So-when you see the sign for the waterfalls, don’t go right, go straight, and keep the playground to your left. The road will curve to the right, and in a couple steps you’ll see a small foot path going right (see picture) and this leads down to a wooden fence marking the edge of the cliff.  You should be able to see a yellow and brown sign saying, “Caution.”  Head towards this sign.  There is another sign close to this area (over a doorway) that says “No Swimming.” We followed this for awhile, and it doesn’t lead down to the fall.

The trail down to the fall is directly below the “Caution” sign, and is almost impossible to see until you are right on top of it.  It is more of a short and steep root staircase, but it only takes a minute to scramble down.  This leads you to the very top of the fall, and from here you have to carefully ease your way down to see the other falls.  The middle fall is not that hard to access, but the lower fall would be.

The falls are beautiful, and access is easy-ish if you take the right trail.  If anyone knows more information about the trails in this park, please let us know.  We recommend calling ahead for information about this location.
