Smalls Falls

Our GPS is for a small parking area at the top of the falls, but there is a large parking lot with restrooms at the base, and a path that leads you directly to the main fall.  The dirt road for the upper lot isn’t marked at all, you just have to look out for it or use GPS.  The lower lot is on the same road, Route 4 or “Main St.” and should be easy to spot.

This is one of our top locations, and it is a gorgeous area.  There is a trail leading along the gorge, which follows a multi-tiered waterfall.  You’ll encounter a number of falls and pools flowing over colorful rocks, culminating is a massive double fall.  At the base there is a large, deep pool, with black water.  People were jumping and climbing up ropes, though there are reports that people have died at this fall.  There is a bridge at the bottom of the falls where people had set up chairs to view the pool and cascade.

The hike from the top to the bottom is about 5 to 10 minutes, and it isn’t difficult, but it has lots roots.  There are no signs prohibiting swimming, but the area wasn’t staffed and we aren’t sure if it is allowed.  You are allowed to be here and use the trails though.  There are bathrooms, but they were pretty dirty when we were there, so be prepared.
