Mount Ida Falls, (Poestenkill Falls?)

CURRENTLY CLOSED

Ok this place is FOR SURE illegal, and it is the only location that we saw police coming to kick everyone out, and tell them they would be arrested for trespassing.  We didn’t know that it was illegal when we visited, as there used to be a park here.  Apparently the structures were burnt down, so it has been closed since then.  This is really a shame, and we hope that the town reopens this park and allows swimmers, as this would be a great tourist attraction.  We are keeping this listing in the event that it does reopen, and also to advise visitors that it is now closed.

This is a stunning waterfall, and clearly very popular. There are multiple ledges and a very deep pool at the bottom. The way down is steep and shaley, so it is slippery and you can cut your feet. From the parking lot, go down the steep field and you’ll see a burnt out viewing platform.  From here there is a trail down to the falls.  The water is tannic black, and very deep. There is no slope or shallows in the water, and the few rocks that are submerged are slick with algae. Even climbing on the flat shore is difficult. If you decide to break the law and trespass, only strong swimmers should enter the water.  This is not a good place for children.

This location is sometimes called Poestenkill Falls, though we have another location that is called by the same name.
