Millstream, Woodstock

UPDATE 05/19: This Swimming hole is on private property and has officially been closed to the public. Unfortunately, the crowds and trash have forced the closure of this gorgeous swimming spot. This is a reminder to please never leave trash, and if possible, help collect trash that you do see, and please always be kind and respectful when visiting these places. For now guests staying at The Woodstock Inn on the Millstream, who own the area, are allowed access.

Social-media driven crowds, garbage, broken glass force Woodstock’s Millstream to close for swimming

This is a popular swimming hole near downtown Woodstock, and parking is wherever you can legally find it.  It is over the bridge crossing the Sawmill River, and there are access paths along the bank.

This is a beautiful spot with turquoise blue water, and multiple small falls.  The largest pool is probably 3-4ft. deep.  This is a great area for kids, and there is a nice feeling of community, and enjoyment of the outdoors.

We have received varying information about the degree of public access available for this location.  Please respect any posted private property, and park only in designated areas.  It is particularly important that visitors are respectful, quiet, and carry out any belongings or refuse, as this is a popular location in a residential area.

Previously we had posted an update that we had been told this location was shut down.  A helpful reader contacted us with information to refute this:

“Just spoke to WPD and this is not the case. Please know that the Sawkill Creek is a national waterway and anyone is allowed to be in any part of that water. The trick is gaining legal access. Trespassing tickets are probably being issued for accessing by way of private property. Solution is to access from pubic property, i.e., county road bridges.”
