Fort Popham
Fort Popham is a coastal fort that was used during the Civil War, and is currently open seasonally as a tourist attraction. You are allowed to explore the fort on your own, and it has some interesting architecture. It would be fun for kids as it isn’t really a museum, but more like a castle you can play in.
There is a nice beach beside the fort, which typically has very calm waters. There are no dogs allowed in the fort, but we did see dogs on the beach. There is very limited parking because this beach is on a small peninsula, and the parking fills up early in the day. There are some restrooms between the fort and the beach, and a restaurant within walking distance.
