Shelving Rock Falls
Our GPS coordinates were taken at the falls. Along the road you will see state park signs, and you want to follow the ones for “Shelving Rock Falls.” If you are coming from the south you’ll see a sign marked “Shelving Rock Falls Trail” followed by a small bridge. The parking lot is the first left after this bridge. From the lot, walk back down the road over the small footbridge, and take the trail marked “Shelving Rock Falls.” Follow the trail to the top of the waterfall and continue walking downhill for maybe 2 minutes, to where the trail turns has a right hand turn marked in yellow. This leads to the falls.
This is about a 5-10 min hike from parking lot. You can continue on and follow steep trails alongside the waterfall all the way down to where you’ll meet up with the much wider blue trail. If follow the blue trail downhill, you’lll hit Lake George where you can swim off tiny footpaths leading to water.
People were climbing in the falls, and there is a small pool but the current is strong, so use caution when exploring this area. Beautiful falls though, and worth the trip. The trail down to Lake George is a moderate hike, and will probably take 30 minutes one way. There are a lot of trails in this area, some of which follow right alongside the deep gorge. Be careful and pay attention to your path.
There was an outhouse at the parking lot we went to, but no real facilities or ranger stations.
